Seven signs of hidden water damage behind a wall
The expensive losses are rarely the dramatic ones. They are the slow leaks nobody saw, found months later by the smell.
- A musty smell is the most reliable early signal
- Bubbling or peeling paint means moisture behind the finish
- An unexplained water bill is a leak you are paying for
- Warm floor spots can mean a slab or radiant leak

1. A musty smell you cannot locate
The most reliable early indicator, and the one most often dismissed. That odour is microbial volatile organic compounds — the gases produced by mold as it grows. It means something is growing somewhere, and mold does not grow without moisture.
It is frequently strongest in a specific room, near a floor, in a cupboard, or when the heating or air conditioning first starts, which is a strong hint that the growth is in the duct system or a cavity feeding it.
If you can smell it and cannot see it, it is behind something.
2. Paint or wallpaper bubbling, peeling or blistering
Paint bonds to a dry surface. When moisture arrives from behind, it breaks that bond and the finish lifts, bubbles or peels. Wallpaper does the same and often shows it earlier at the seams.
This is moisture pushing outward through the wall, which means the material behind is already wet rather than becoming wet.
3. Discolouration or staining with no obvious source
Yellow, brown or dark patches on walls or ceilings, particularly ones that grow slowly or reappear after painting. Concentric rings mean repeated wetting cycles over time rather than a single event.
Also look low on walls behind furniture and inside cupboards under sinks, which nobody inspects and where slow leaks run for months.
4. Floors that have changed
Cupping, buckling or springiness in hardwood. Lifting or curling edges on laminate and vinyl. Loose or hollow-sounding tiles. Carpet that feels damp or cool underfoot in one area.
Floors sit at the bottom of everything, so they show water that has travelled from elsewhere — frequently from a wall cavity or a floor above.
5. A water bill that does not match your usage
One of the few genuinely objective signals available to you. A meaningful rise with no change in household usage means water is leaving the system somewhere.
Test it: turn off every tap and water-using appliance, then read the meter, wait an hour without using anything, and read it again. Movement means a leak. That leak may be under a slab, in a wall, in an irrigation line or in a service pipe underground.
6. Warm patches on the floor, or a boiler losing pressure
Specific to houses with radiant heating in the slab, which on Long Island means much of the Levitt-era stock and its imitators. A leak in a radiant loop shows as a warm patch on the floor, unexplained damp at the slab perimeter, or a heating system that keeps losing pressure and needing topping up.
Do not let anyone break concrete to chase it before thermal imaging locates the loop. Cutting the wrong section can sever an intact circuit and turn a repair into a heating system replacement.
7. Sounds that should not be there
Running or trickling water when nothing is on. A hissing behind a wall. A toilet refilling itself periodically. A pump cycling more often than it used to.
Listen when the house is quiet — late at night is best. Pressurised supply leaks in particular are frequently audible before they are visible.
What to do about it
Do not open the wall speculatively. Moisture meters and thermal imaging find water without demolition, and they establish the extent rather than just the presence, which matters both for the repair and for any insurance claim.
Thermal imaging in particular is non-invasive — it detects the temperature differential caused by evaporative cooling where moisture is present, so it can show a wet area through an intact finish.
If you have one of these signs, it is worth measuring. If you have two or more in the same area, it is worth measuring today, because the difference between a small hidden leak and a mold remediation is mostly time.
Questions, answered
Can you find a leak without breaking the wall?
Usually, yes. Moisture meters read through and into materials, and thermal imaging shows the temperature differential that moisture creates, so a wet area can be identified through an intact finish. That establishes where and how far before anything is opened, which is better for the repair and for a claim.
The smell comes and goes. Does that mean it is not serious?
Not at all — it usually means humidity is changing. Microbial odour becomes stronger when it is warm and humid, which is why people notice it in summer or when the heating first runs. An intermittent musty smell is still a moisture problem; it is just more detectable at some times than others.
Our water bill jumped but we can't find anything.
Do the meter test — everything off, read, wait an hour without using water, read again. Movement confirms a leak. If the interior is dry, look at irrigation lines, outside taps and the underground service pipe between the meter and the house, which can leak for a long time with nothing visible above ground.
How long can a hidden leak run before it matters?
It already matters. Mold begins colonising cellulose materials within roughly 24 to 48 hours of them becoming wet, so a leak that has been running for weeks has almost certainly produced growth in the cavity. The question is how far it has gone, not whether it has started.
